The Christian Woman & Contraceptives 1 By Khadi Forna-Tucker Power Hour Team

will be giving scriptural teaching on a very sensitive subject which was simple in earlier less complicated and confusing times. A man and woman get married and as expected or as a general rule children follow. Contraception methods have and will always be practiced even though they were unsophisticated and frequently unreliable in the past, nothing like the modern methods we have today.

TThere are many Christians both in the past and present who believe that all forms of contraceptive methods are automatically siSinful, but in actual fact this position is not supported by the word of God. People who believe that contraception is sinful base their support on the view of Onan’s account in Gen 38:6-10.) The question that may need answering is what led to God been displeased with Onan. Supporters of this view claim that Onan was practising the use of a crude form on contraception which is regarded as been sinful.  However, according to scripture the Lord was displeased with Onan because of his refusal to raise up seed for his deceased brother, Er.
The Lord instructed Moses that if brothers dwell together and one of them dies without leaving children, the wife of the deceased brother shall not marry unto a stranger. The brother shall take his deceased brother’s wife and performs his duty as a husband, and any child born shall be name in honour of the deceased brother, so that his name should not be put out of Israel (Deut 25: 5&8).

Onan knew that the child shall not be called his, but that of his brother’s Er, so he used a contraceptive method known as ‘loitus interruptus (spilling of sperm to the ground). He did this so that he will not give seed to his dead brother. Does this passage however warrant us to condemn the use of contraceptive methods? certainly not.
Now don’t get me wrong one of the reasons why God instituted marriage was for man and woman to legitimately increase of mankind.  God create man in his own image and likeness, blessed them and said unto them to be ‘fruitful and multiply’, (Gen1:27-28). When a man and woman become husband and wife, it is required of them to have children and become parents if the Lord grants them this. Children are the heritage of the Lord and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man, so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them, (Psalm 127:3-5). However that is not the only reason God created marriage the other is for mutual pleasure of both husband and wife (1 Cor. 7:2-5).
Sexual intercourse according to (1 Cor. 7) is part of marriage, and even though one of its purposes is to bear children yet it needs to be planned.  If we are to plan child birth, while at the same time engaging in sexual intercourse as husband and wife then the use of legitimate contraception is allowed.
Some forms of contraception:

The Rhythms method- a natural method of contraception where there is no sexual intercourse when the woman is thought be most fertile.
Loitus Interruptus- this is the spilling of sperm to the ground rather than into the woman. This is not very effective, as there is the likely hood of the sperm entering into the woman. This was the method Onan used.
Male and female condoms, Diaphragma, Spermicides, combined oral contraceptive (COCs), Progestin – only pills (POPs), Combined injectable contraceptive (CICs), Projestin- only injectable contraceptive (PICs), Intra- Uterine Devices (IUDs), Norplant implant, Vasectomy, Female sterilization.
In this ever changing times the words of the living God never changes. It is the responsibility of the Christian woman to pray and seek God for direction in this area. As you have to be fully convinced in your heart before taking steps, to avoid living in condemnation and guilt. We are trusting God for our sisters to make an informed choice. The best answer is to go to the word read it, study, be familiar with it and obey it. Above all asked God He knows all things and He is your creator. Watch out part 2
