Knowing God's Name Part 7, by Aije Barnes, Nov 5, issue 2, Vol 5

“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he knows and understands My name [has a personal knowledge of My mercy, love, and kindness–trusts and relies on Me, knowing I will never forsake him, no, never]. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him and show him My salvation.” ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭91:14-16‬ ‭AMP‬‬

Welcome to the seventh and final part of 'Knowing God's Name' series. These are the four names of God I shall share with you in this final series:

EL ROI: "God of Seeing" (Genesis 16:13) – the name ascribed to God by Hagar, alone and desperate in the wilderness after being driven out by Sarah (Genesis 16:1-14). When Hagar met the Angel of the Lord, she realized she had seen God Himself in a theophany. She also realized that El Roi saw her in her distress and testified that He is a God who lives and sees all.

Have you ever heard the question 'where is God in all these distress and disasters in this world?' You may sometimes ask yourself the same question when you are personally affected by life's challenges and feel that God is not around and cannot see what is happening. This is not true. As you can see from His name, He is the God who sees. In the scripture referred to above, the name the Angel of the Lord gave  Hagar's unborn son was Ishmael which means 'God hears'. So you see, God not only sees and knows what is going on, he also hears your cries and complaints. God is always in control even when we feel out of our depth and can't get our heads around what is happening. Remember that as a child of God, you are enemy number one to the devil and his hordes. For this reason, he will try all he can to to make you feel you are all alone and powerless. This is a big lie because greater is He who is in you than he that is in the world. God sees what is happening and will answer when you call on Him. Looking back  into the scriptures on the way God dealt with Israel, which is an example we as Christians have been admonished  to  learn not to make the same mistakes in Hebrews chapter 4 verse 11, we see that it is man's rebellion and disobedience towards God that sets him and his offspring under a curse and on the pathway of destruction. But God sees and hears everything- even the cry for mercy and our prayers of intercession. The prayers of a righteous man avails much. The lack of prayers and failure of a child of God to 'stand in the gap' leaves a very big opportunity for the righteous judgment of God to have its full effect. Let us remember that He is also the God who sees and hears.

YAHWEH-SABAOTH: "The Lord of Hosts" (Isaiah 1:24Psalm 46:7) – Hosts means “hordes,” both of angels and of men. He is Lord of the host of heaven and of the inhabitants of the earth, of Jews and Gentiles, of rich and poor, master and slave. The name is expressive of the majesty, power, and authority of God and shows that He is able to accomplish what He determines to do.

This name of God clearly demonstrates that He is not only God of the Angels but also of all mankind no matter their status or nationality. So when you call on His name, do so in the knowledge that he is your God and you belong to Him. He is powerful and a God of authority. There is nothing too hard for Him do do on your behalf.

EL-OLAM: "Everlasting God" (Psalm 90:1-3) – God’s nature is without beginning or end, free from all constraints of time, and He contains within Himself the very cause of time itself. “From everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”

This name of God gives us the confidence to know that we are forever  safe in His hands.

EL-GIBHOR: “Mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6) – the name describing the Messiah, Christ Jesus, in this prophetic portion of Isaiah. As a powerful and mighty warrior, the Messiah, the Mighty God, will accomplish the destruction of God’s enemies and rule with a rod of iron (Revelation 19:15).

This name clearly refers to Jesus. Jesus is our mighty and victorious warrior. He has delivered us from the bondage of sin  and from under the rulership of the devil. This is what the bible says: “And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭2:15‬ ‭NIV‬‬ and: “But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.” ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭2:14‬ ‭NIV‬‬.

Those who do not know Christ remain in bondage. Christians who do not know the power in his name also remain entangled in bondage.

Therefore as children of God let us stand fast in the freedom that Christ has set us free and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

I encourage you to go back and read the opening verse of this ministration and meditate on it and all the names of God I have shared with you in this series.

Shalom.

  1. Dear friends,

Welcome to part 7, which the final part of 'Knowing God's Name' series. I can't overemphasise how important to your Christian life it is to know God's name. God reveals his nature and character in His names. If you are a child of God who is called by his name, it is right for you to love and know the name by which you are called. When you do, it sets you apart from the world and God's promises to you in psalms 91 verses 14-16, will be fulfilled. When you know and understand God's names, you get to know God and they that know their God shall be strong and do exploits!

    Shalom
