Knowing God's Name by Aije Barnes, August 4 issue 1 Vol 5

“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he knows and understands My name [has a personal knowledge of My mercy, love, and kindness–trusts and relies on Me, knowing I will never forsake him, no, never]. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him and show him My salvation. ”Psalm‬ ‭91:14-16‬ ‭AMP‬‬

Some weeks ago, when I shared on 'The Secret Place', I very much wanted to share further on the last 3 verses of Psalms 91 shown above. I will do this now, to be covered over a few ministrations. It is important to keep up because in knowing God's name there are a lot of benefits to this as shown in the opening verses above. As I share with you God's names in each ministration, I will always start with the opening verses above so that you can refer back to God's promises to those who know His name and claim it for yourself as a child of His.

You will note in the beginning of the verse above, the Lord promised deliverance to the person who sets his/her love upon Him.  God has already shown and demonstrated His love towards us in that while we were yet sinners He gave Jesus to die for us and reconcile us back to Him through his death and resurrection.  God wants us to reciprocate that love by accepting His love through believing and receiving Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. When we do, He delivers us from our sins and the consequence of sinning, because the wages of sin is death. But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ His Son.  This is the first step of getting to know God's name.

To those who are already His children, we must always set our love upon Him and not divert it anywhere else. Remember what the Lord said in Revelations chapter 2 verse 4:

“But I have this [one charge to make] against you: that you have left (abandoned) the love that you had at first [you have deserted Me, your first love].

As children of God we demonstrate our love for Him by loving other people because the word of God says:

“If anyone says, I love God, and hates (detests, abominates) his brother [in Christ], he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, Whom he has not seen.” ‭‭1 John‬ ‭4:20‬ ‭AMP‬‬

Jesus also commands us to love our enemies and pray for those who despitefully hate us.  And He said: 'If you [really] love Me, you will keep (obey) My commands.” ‭‭John‬ ‭14:15‬ ‭AMP‬‬

Jesus further commands in Rev 2:5:

'Remember then from what heights you have fallen. Repent (change the inner man to meet God's will) and do the works you did previously [when first you knew the Lord], or else I will visit you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you change your mind and repent.” ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭2:4-5‬ ‭AMP‬‬.

It is very important to first set your love upon God then get to know His Name. In the scriptures, there are many names by which the Lord is know. Each of the many names of God describes a different aspect of His many-faceted character. Here is one of the better-known names of God in the Bible:

EL, ELOAH: God "mighty, strong, prominent" (Genesis 7:1Isaiah 9:6) – etymologically, El appears to mean “power,” as in “I have the power to harm you” (Genesis 31:29). El is associated with other qualities, such as integrity (Numbers 23:19), jealousy (Deuteronomy 5:9), and compassion (Nehemiah 9:31), but the root idea of might remains.

Isn't God's name amazing?! Acknowledge who God is to you and in every area of your life based on His name. Meditate on this wonder and praise Him for who He is. Bring your prayer requests to Him based on your knowledge of His name and be thankful to Him for who He is.

More next time...
Shalom
